If a fuel cell demonstration is underway, but no one sees it, does it make it to the market?
Typically, federal laboratories, universities, and local governments have provided a spark to the fuel cell industry and serve as sites for demonstration projects.
Commercialization opportunities, though, are lessened because the private sector infrequently sees the benefits first-hand.
The Central Ohio Aerospace and Technology Center is a unique, public-private venue which is ideally suited as a test pad for a fuel cell.
The Heath-Newark-Licking County Port Authority and its COATC campus make a unique marriage of government and industry. The 18 different tenants at
the COATC are a who's who list for the aerospace industry. At the same time, the 57-acre size of the Base Campus of the COATC is small enough for a fuel cell demonstration to get noticed.
COATC is on the radar screen for its role as a privatized, former Air Force Base with a $200 million economic impact. In the past six years, visitors to the COATC include the CEO and various Vice Presidents of Boeing, Air Force officers, and corporate officials with Battelle, Raytheon, L3, Northrop Grumman, Honeywell, J.F. Lehman, and other aerospace and defense industry leaders. Government V.I.P. visits include those by two U.S. senators, several members of Congress, Ohio Governor Ted Strickland, and a host of federal, state, and local officials.

Those V.I.P. visits translate to an opportunity to have a true, meaningful demonstration and one that can be regulary observed by private- and public-sector fuel cell industry leaders. The Port Authority's on-site wireless LAN means the infrastructure is already in place for
24/7, online access to control, reporting, and monitoring of the fuel cell project and its function.
The Port Authority isn't just a marketer or a facilitator. As the fourth-largest Port Authority in Ohio, the Heath-Newark-Licking County Port Authority is a property manager which is capable of being an active partner and collaborator in a success-driven fuel cell demonstration project. The Port Authority has been an exhibitor at Ohio Fuel Cell Coalition symposia.
